FAQs
for Performing Artists
I want to be on
stage! How do I sign
up to perform at RAM?
There are two types of performers at RAM: Stage Performers and Street
Performers. Both types of performers must send in an application,
and
selected acts may be called for an audition. Winners of the auditions
will then
be scheduled to perform. If you are out of town and cannot audition,
please
send references.
Do I get paid to perform at RAM?
Sorry, think fame and glory here. Performers are generally unpaid,
although
special headliner groups may be booked outside of the audition process
and
compensated at our discretion. Stage performers may offer CDs for sale
after
the performance, and street performers may "pass the hat."
(Street performers have generally done quite well with the hat, often
making
$50 to $400 per day.)
I want to perform on the River Stage at RAM, and
I have questions
about it. Who can I contact?
Our River Stage Performers will be scheduled by VIP
Productions. Click here to
email them.
Will there be a sound
system/amplification on the River Stage?
Yes, a full professional sound system will be provided for musicians
and
performing artists on the River Stage. Street performers may use boom
boxes or
MP3 players with volume adjusted to cover a small area for certain
performances
with permission in advance. Street performers may also apply to appear
on the
smaller "Crossroads Stage" in the center of RAM, which has a small PA
system.
How will I attain fame and glory at RAM?
People will clap and cheer (not guaranteed). Your name/act will appear
on
signage, on our website, and in various ads and press releases
distributed to
the media.
Where
will the street performers perform at RAM?
Several locations are designated for street performances. You may be
requested
to remain in one specific area, or you may be allowed to roam freely
among the
crowd, depending on the nature of your act. Street performers may also
perform
in the center of RAM on the "Crossroads Stage", which has a small PA
system. Generally street performers are scheduled every half-hour to
appear on
this stage.
Each week, a featured act is scheduled for the bigger "Roundhouse
Stage," which is a large non-elevated area where a solo performer can
present his/her performance continuously throughout the day. Performers
will
need to provide their own PA system for this stage, if needed.
Where can I park?
Performing artists will be given first-come use of the available
parking spaces
at the First Guaranty Bank across the street. If that is full,
you may
park in the Fidelity National Financial lots along Riverside Avenue
or any available
street-side spaces. There is no parking
in the Red Cross lot for Performing Artists – violators will be towed!
If you have special
needs, please
discuss this with the Market Manager in advance. There will be no
vehicles allowed
on the Market Site between 9:30am and 4:15pm. If you need to drop off
any heavy
items in the morning, do it well before 9:30. The artists will be busy
setting
up their booths, and it will be congested, so it is much better to
"walk
it in and walk it out."
How many visitors do you expect at RAM?
We have had an average of 10,000 to 20,000 visitors per Saturday, with
a high
of well over 30,000 on Opening Day.
Do I have to abide by other guidelines?
Yes, there are specific requirements for performers, and you should
review the guidelines on this website.
(Follow this link, and go to "For Performing Artists" in the box at
the left.)
What is it like to be
a street performer at RAM?
to read a recent front page Times-Union newspaper article,
which will
give you an idea of street performing at our weekly event.
Please note:
The Riverside Arts Market is a smoke-free environment. Please step out
to the
sidewalk if you wish to smoke. RAM is also a green market, that is, no
styrofoam or non-biodegradable packaging is allowed for our artists and
vendors.
